Parents play a key role in the learning and development
of their teenage drivers. We encourage parents to become actively involved in their son's or
daughter's driving educational experience. Your involvement won't necessarily take a lot of
time. However, you can provide them with the encouragement to learn about safety by offering
helpful driving and safety suggestions, pointing out unsafe driving conditions whenever they
exist, offering your own experiences that have made you a safer driver, and allowing them to
later drive with you as much as possible while helping them to access and improve their
driving ability. "A car is a three-thousand-pound loaded weapon," so please take your teen's
driving experience very seriously and offer lots of encouragement and support. Your support
will last a lifetime.
Every year approximately 45,000 Americans are killed tragically
in automobile accidents. Many of those accidents could have been prevented with some of the
defensive driving techniques that we cover in this course. We strongly recommend that the car
your son or daughter eventually learns to drive in is the family's safest car, as the car your
children drives often determines whether they will survive a collision Statistics indicate that
most of us will get into an accident at some point during our lives. Please take this moment
to visit the United States Government Car Crash Test Site,
www.safercar.gov, to see whether the car(s) you have or a car you may be considering in the
future has a high crash test rating (preferably five stars!). We cannot recommend a car, but
we do recommend that you take a moment to learn about the potential of your car to save your life
(and the life of your child) in the event of an accident.
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA)
conducts thousands of crash safety tests every year to determine the crash survivabilty of
various car models. The crash test data go back about 15 years, to include both new and used
vehicles. Please visit and bookmark www.safercar.gov for
this government crash test data. Recently, at an intersection near our corporate headquarters,
a 20-year-old was killed in a low speed, side-impact collision. The police investigator later
stated, "He would have survived if his car had been equipped with a side-impact bar." Safety
starts even before our children get behind the wheel. And what better way to start than by
visiting this fabulous government test site tonight with your son or daughter.
